The Nine Dot puzzle was first referenced in Sam Lloyd’s 1914 Cyclopedia of Puzzles…how do you connect 9 dots, laid out in a square, with 4 straight, continuous lines without re-tracing over a line and without lifting the pen?

The solutions rely on the lines being drawn outside the square, or outside of the box and therefore challenges the perceived boundaries of the puzzle…boundaries that don’t actually exist!

The Nine Dot puzzle is said to have spawned the first use, of the now clichéd phrase, “think outside the box”.
